loved that video clip. really so sweet. Thanx for posting that.
Was a bit confused about husband applying sindoor. happens in the north mebbe. here in south, the karva chauth(karadayaar nombu) that women observe has nothing to do with male presence. Only women fast, fasten a new  yellow thread and break the fast  at the auspicious time with rice vadas.Sindoor stands for husband's longevity and so does mangal sutra.I think, as u said, it is all belief. SOme bold lady, who defies it will know that husband can live longer even without these strappings. it is more to bind two people interminably with the help of beliefs. IT may be false allright , but the objective is achieved.

Ravi  -- was it the prohibition of alcohol in Gujarat, or the signature for 'drunkard', or both that you were identifying as a 'sacred cow'? I would love to see your trainee's list of 65 'sacred cows'. Could you please post them in a sulekha blog for our edification and entertainment? I suspect that I could probably make a list of 65 additional 'sacred cows'!  -- GF

Almost any social or religious practice you wish to name could be rightly labeled a 'sacred cow' that serves no real purpose. Here's an example: the requirement to cover up the genitals, breasts, or other body parts with clothing. Why should anyone's choice of clothing, or no clothing, be dictated by anything but the weather? Instead, some people's peculiar and unnecessary religious and social taboos on nakedness are enforced on everyone.   -- GF
